The central idea behind the design conjured up by KEM STUDIO was to create a relaxing and nature-centric hub that allows the homeowners to leave behind their hectic urban life. It is essentially a house that has the aura of a ‘serene second home’!
Taking cues from local architecture and the buildings cherished past the was designed by Walker Warner Architects to create a bridge between two different eras. The exterior of the house and its overall silhouette mimic the form of a classic residence that is all too common in this part of California.
The new cheerful interior of this aged house reflects the specific aesthetic and lifestyle choices of its owners – Brooklyn-based writer Gayle Forman and her musician-librarian husband.
An open floor plan living brings air of modernity to the house while the decorative pieces and color palette usher in a much more traditional vibe. Color scheme inside the house is largely neutral with off-white cream and brown holding their own in every room. Accent hues come in the form of light relaxing blues and natural greens.
An open double-height living area sits at the heart of the home with a large dining area and kitchen next to it. A loft-style bedroom and reading nook sits above the kitchen and dining space and offers a wonderful whimsical escape while natural fiber rugs and linen curtains usher in a sense of softness and visual contrast.
It is this continuous presence of brick that gives the addition its unique appeal even as the lovely clerestory windows above usher in a hint of modern industrial flair.
